22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.
23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.
The most devastating sin is worry. When Jesus said, “Do not worry” that means to worry is a sin. It is missing the mark. Scripture teaches us that which is not of faith is sin and when we worry we are not walking by faith we are walking by sight. When you teach believers this you would think they would get excited to know that God did not create them to live a life of worry. Yet many look at you like your crazy when you quote Jesus’ own words not to do so.
Worry is a result of three primary things. You will find reading further in Luke 12 that this is a result of not seeking the kingdom of God, but instead seeking the things of this world. Jesus said when you become focused on God’s kingdom, all the things you have need of will be added unto you. Secondly we are told to cast all our cares once and for all upon God (1 Peter 5:7). God did not create us to be burdened with the cares of life and that is why He said to cast them upon Him. Again you would think believers would get excited about learning that they can entrust all their cares unto God, and yet many will not do what God has told us to do with the cares of life but will instead hold onto them.
Finally we are told to meditate on God’s good report for us found in His Word, but instead Christians dwell on all that is bad in their life and in the world (Phil. 4:8). Living a life of worry Jesus said will not add anything to your life and in fact doctors will tell you it is the most detrimental thing to your health. Every believer in Christ can live a worry free life for if it was not so Jesus would not have told us not to worry. Thank God we can live a worry free life.
