1 Timothy 1:19
To do this you must hold firmly to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck in regard to the faith.
There is a vital truth revealed in this verse that is often overlooked when it comes to our walk of faith. Those who walk by faith and not by sight as we are told to do so in scripture have a complete trust in God and therefore trust that what God says is truth, and that settles all issues in life. When you have that kind of trust you will also speak in line with His Word and act in line with the Word as well. But there is something that can undermine our faith.
When a ship becomes shipwrecked in the days of the Bible it was usually because the ship had run aground on a sand bar or was sunk because it runs into rocks under the surface. In either case that ship is going nowhere. This is what can happen to the believers faith if they do not pay attention to their conscience. The conscience is the voice of our spirit man within (Romans 9:1). If we reject the voice of our spirit we to can become shipwrecked in our faith going nowhere.
The conscience or voice of our spirit is where we learn to follow the guidance of our spirit man, which when born again will lead us in line with the Word of God. When we reject our conscience we are not walking in line with the Word and therefore out of faith, for faith without works is dead. Not only that but our conscience will also reveal when we have missed it with God and if we listen and repent we maintain our confidence toward God and our faith remains active. So listen closely to your conscience if you don’t want to have your faith shipwrecked causing your faith to go nowhere.
