Don’t Shipwreck Your Faith

1 Timothy 1:19

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

There is a vital truth revealed in this verse that is often overlooked when it comes to our walk of faith. Those who walk by faith and not by sight as we are told to do so in scripture, have a complete trust in God and therefore trust that what God says is truth, and that settles every issue in life. When you have that kind of trust you will also speak in line with His Word and act in line with the Word as well. But there is something that can undermine our faith.

When a ship becomes shipwrecked in the days of the Bible it was usually because the ship had run aground on a sand bar or was sunk because it ran into rocks under the surface. In either case that ship is going nowhere. This is what can happen to a believers faith if they do not pay attention to their conscience. The conscience is the voice of our spirit man within (Romans 9:1). If we reject the voice of our spirit we to can become shipwrecked in our faith going nowhere.

The conscience or voice of our spirit is where we learn to follow the guidance of our spirit man, which when born again will lead us in line with the Word of God. When we reject our conscience we are not walking in line with the Word and therefore out of faith, for faith without corresponding action is dead. Our conscience will reveal when we have missed it with God and if we listen and repent we maintain our confidence toward God and our faith remains active. So listen closely to your conscience if you don’t want to become shipwrecked, causing your faith to go nowhere.

Do Not Worry

Luke 12:22-23

22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.

23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

The most devastating sin is worry. When Jesus said, “Do not worry” that means to worry is a sin. That which is not of faith is sin and when we worry we are not walking by faith, we are walking by sight. There are three key things you can do to overcome worry. One: Get your focus on the kingdom of God and off of the world. You will find reading further in Luke 12 worry is a result of not seeking the kingdom of God, but instead seeking the things of this world. Jesus said when you become focused on God’s kingdom, all the things you have need of will be added unto you.

Two: Cast all your care upon God. We are told to cast all our cares once and for all upon Him (1 Peter 5:7). God did not create us to be burdened with the cares of life and that is why He said to cast them upon Him. When you allow the cares of life to rule your thoughts, you become a pack mule for the devil. When you release your cares to God, you must have scripture to stand on because thoughts will come to try and get you to worry. You cast those thoughts down by declaring what God’s Word says.

Three: Choose to meditate on God’s Word, the good report. Philippians 4:8 tells us to meditate on God’s good report found in His Word, instead of dwelling on all that is bad in life and in the world. Realize this, living a life of worry Jesus said will not add anything to your life, and in fact doctors will tell you it is the most detrimental thing to your health. Every believer in Christ can live a worry free life for if it was not so, Jesus would not have told us not to worry.

Three very important areas that truly all believers should understand and develop in so they can fulfil their God-given purpose.

Jesus Our Healer

Matthew 8:17

This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, “He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.”

Jesus at Calvary carried away sickness and disease for us all. The prophecy of Isaiah 53:4 has been fulfilled. All we have to do is receive by faith in our hearts what He has already done for us. Healing comes from the Spirit of God and it manifests in the physical body. Healing is a part of the salvation package purchased for us, for by the stripes He bore in His body we are healed.

These truths in scripture reveal clearly that it is God’s will to heal us. Jesus Himself was anointed by God and went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed of the devil. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Many often question if it is God’s will to heal them, but Jesus proved it is His will for us to be healed, for no one who came to Jesus in faith for healing was ever turned away.

Jesus healed everyone who came to Him in faith and so it is today for those who come to Him in faith, believing they receive their healing when they pray for He has not changed. Take the scriptures that reveal healing in the Bible and meditate on them until they become real to you. When they do you can release your faith to receive what is a promise of God for you.

He Has Overcome The World

John 16:33

I’ve told you this so that my peace will be with you. In the world you’ll have trouble. But cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

Troubles or storms of life come to all. Jesus did not tell us this so that we would be troubled by them. He has already overcome the world’s troubles you will face. Jesus taught us that if you come to Him and hear what He says but do not do what He says, you will be like a man who built a house on sand. Storms would come and when they do the house would fall.

But if you come to Him and you hear and do what He has said, you will be like a man who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock. When the storms come the house would not only stand, it would not be shaken. In this fallen world you will face trouble or storms of life. But the person who has come to Jesus and will listen to what He has to say and is a doer of the Word, and not just a hearer only, they have a strong foundation upon which they will stand.

Those who do so are those who walk by faith and not by sight. When the storms come they not only won’t go down, Jesus said they would not be shaken by the storm. It is not up to God if we overcome for He has already provided victory for us, it is up to us. Spend time with the Lord and listen to what He has said in His Word, and be a doer of the Word. If you do you will walk in perfect peace, and you will not be defeated.

Become One With The Word

John 15:7

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

This is one of the most powerful truths in the Bible. Think about what Jesus said here. To abide means to remain one with. We abide in Jesus when we become born again and follow after Him. If we do not deny Christ we remain one with Him. But His Word must also abide in us, or remain one with us. Another way to say this is the Word of God must prevail over us. God’s Word is a prevailing force in the earth for His Word created everything, therefore everything is subject to His Word.

When His Word prevails over us then what we speak is the Word of God, which will come to pass. For His Word to abide in us we must have our minds renewed to the Word of God. This is more than just head knowledge of the Word. It must prevail over our thought life so that we think like God’s Word, but a mind is not fully renewed until it has transformed how we live. His Word must also prevail over our actions as well.

When God’s Word is prevailing over our thoughts and we now see ourselves in Christ as a new creation, and that Word prevails over our actions as well, then His Word will prevail through us for there is nothing more powerful than the Word of God. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His Word will never pass away. Remain one with Jesus and let His Word prevail over you, becoming one with that Word, and you shall ask what you desire and it shall be done through the prevailing Word of God.

Abide In Him

John 15:4

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

To abide in Christ means to remain one with Him. We are to bear the fruit of Christ, walking in the example He has given us. In Matthew 16:24 Jesus said if anyone desires to come after Him, to become a follower of Christ, which would be the same as abiding in Him; we must deny self, take up our cross and follow Him. For years I spent most of my time teaching people to deny self and take up their cross, but I missed the most important part.

Do you have a desire to follow after Jesus? Without that desire you won’t deny self nor take up your cross. The word “desire” means to be resolved or determined to fulfill a purpose, to delight in. If you want to abide in Christ you must have a determined purpose to follow Him. It is what you take delight in, meaning you have this resolve with a “want to” attitude, not a “have to” attitude.

That desire will help you deny self, which means to disown. Once born again we have been bought with a price, we belong to God, we are not our own. We are to lay down our will. That desire will cause you to take up your cross, to fulfill God’s will for your life when the old fleshly nature wants to do something else instead. Cultivate a desire in your heart to abide in Jesus and you will bear much fruit (become Christ-like).

Discern The Lord’s Body

John 6:56

“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.

When we receive communion we are reminded of the Lord’s body and the blood that was given for us. Scripture teaches us that if we do not rightly discern the Lord’s body this is the reason why many are weak, sick, and some die early (1 Cor. 11:29-30). We discern the Lord’s body three ways:

1. Acknowledge the stripes of Jesus that paid for your bodily healing. With the stripes that wounded Him, we are healed and made whole.

2. Do not speak evil of other believers for they are a part of the body. If we slander and gossip about other believers, we speaking harm to ourselves. We are to walk in the love of God toward one another, therefore not speaking evil of others.

3. Recognize who you are in Christ Jesus and do not belittle yourself for you are His body whom He has purchased. When we do not recognize who we are in Christ, we will be hindered in receiving what we have in Christ. We must come to know who we are to partake of what we have been given through His blood that was shed for us.

So if we want to walk in health and healing we must learn to discern the Lord’s body. When we do we can experience the benefit of what Jesus purchased for us through the blood He shed, and through the body that He gave for us as He not only bore our sins, but He bore our sickness, disease, pain and suffering also. Receive what He has provided for you.
