Therefore, my beloved, …work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
A key for us as believers is to learn how to work out your own salvation. Simply put, I cannot walk out your faith, and you cannot walk out mine. Things that are black and white in scripture are not to be debated. Many try, and we all have, to make scripture fit what we want it to say. But the fact is I will not give an account for your walk with God, and you will not give an account for mine.
As believers we are all to speak the Truth in love. Some will receive it, and some will not. What is critical to working out your own salvation is to agree to disagree. There are things in life that you will face choices about that may not be so clear in scripture, which should lead us to seek direction from God. This direction does not come by choices made in fear, but in fact made in faith. What every believer must do is simply focus on themselves in the choices they make, for you only have control over your own will.
If you love God with all your heart you will choose to follow God’s Word, even when it is challenging to do so. But every believer must remember to work out my own salvation means I will not try to work out yours. You and I will face the consequences, good or bad, based on those choices. We should never stop sharing God’s Truth, for it is the very thing that frees us. But I, like everyone else, can only work out my salvation of which I will give an account for, as we all will.
