Don’t Fall Asleep

27 Jun

1 Thessalonians 5:6, 8
6 Therefore, we must not fall asleep like other people, but we must stay awake and be sober.
8 Since we belong to the day, we must be sober. We must put on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

Those who are born again Jesus has warned in the gospels to watch (stay awake), not to fall asleep, which means to become spiritually lazy. Here in 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul is warning believers about the same thing right before the return of the Lord, not to fall asleep as some do. If you become spiritually lazy and fall asleep not only will you be unprepared for the Lord’s return, you can be taken advantage of by satan through fear and deception. What are some of the key things Paul reveals to stay awake.

In verse eight he reveals three things you must put on and keep on. The breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. It goes without saying you need faith to overcome the things that satan is bringing into manifestation in our world. Many believers are not waking by faith, but are in fear. The key element to maintain your faith walk is hearing the Truth of God’s Word preached. If you do not get under the teaching of God’s Truth for your life, you will be weak in faith.

You need to maintain your love walk. The key to doing this is to maintain a close walk with God the Father, for He is love. If you walk in the love of God, that love not only reaches out to others, it is also willing to speak the Truth. You also need to maintain the hope of your salvation, which means to never lose sight of the Lord’s return. Many have, for if they knew how close His return was, they would as scripture teaches keep themselves purified from the world. Maintain these three key areas for your life and you will not be found sleeping when Jesus returns.
