Propitiation

17 Jul

1 John 2:1-2
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

The third truth of our redemption that Jesus completed for us is in the work of propitiation. This is one of the areas that satan lies to believers the most, convincing them that God is mad at them and must be punishing them. Many Christians do not understand this redeeming work of propitiation. It means to satisfy the wrath of God by taking the punishment our sin deserved.

Because of the sin of Adam in the garden, punishment for that sin had to come. But Jesus was the One who took our punishment. He satisfied the wrath of God toward sin as Isaiah 53:5 tells us, that He was wounded for our rebellious acts, and He was punished so that we could have peace with God. In the above scriptures it declares we have an Advocate with the Father, Who is the propitiation for our sin, taking our punishment. When we sin we may reap bad consequences for sowing to the flesh, but God is not punishing us.

In Isaiah 54:9-10 the Word declares that just as God promised to never flood the earth again, He has also promised not to be angry with nor punish those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. He has given us a covenant of peace. The devil loves to convince believers God is angry with them and therefore punishing them so they will accept their circumstances, and not draw near to the One who has delivered them. Don’t fall for this lie that God is mad at you and punishing you. Jesus already took the punishment we deserved.
